PRAIRIE STATE ENERGY CAMPUS
Located in Marissa, Illinois
Project Overview
- Two-unit, 1629MW coal-fired generation facility
- Supercritical power plant technology
- Unit 1 (812MW) commercial operation in June 2012
- Unit 2 (817MW) commercial operation in November 2012
- Both units operating at higher than 800MW nameplate capabilities
- Performance tests indicate units are operating more efficiently than expected (~1% better than contract guarantees)
State of the Art Environmental Controls
- Feature Best Available Control Technology (“BACT”) and are fully compliant with environmental regulations
- Specific controls include:
- NOx controls, including selective catalytic reduction
- Dry and wet electrostatic precipitators to eliminate 99.9% of particulates
- Sulfur-dioxide scrubbers
- Powdered-activated-carbon injection to remove 90% of mercury emissions
Fuel Supply Highlights
- Pulverized coal from Lively Grove Mine in Illinois, adjacent to Prairie State
- Prepaid and favorably priced coal supply for approximately 30 years (200 million tons)
- Location of coal reserves and mine adjacent to coal-fired generation facility provides:
- Favorable fuel access
- Elimination of rail transportation risk
- Favorable impact on transportation-related emissions
- In case of mine closure for emergency repairs, 15 days of coal on hand at mine and 60 days at generating site
- Rail access also accommodates coal purchased from third parties in event of extended mine disruption
